About the Organization

Mission

The primary mission of the "Single Malt Scotch Tasters of Reno" (SMSToR) club is to sample as many of the fine single malt scotch whiskies that are available at a reasonable cost----------and have a great lot of fun with friends while doing the sampling. Great single malts are much better appreciated in the company of friends. Occasionally, depending upon member interest, an individual chapter of SMSToR may assess whiskies other than single malts scotch whiskies. Also, a group Tasting Note is prepared by each individual chapter for each whisky assessed.

Brief History

In January of 2000, Bruce Douglas and Paul Lenz established the founding chapter of the "Single Malt Scotch Tasters of Reno" (SMSToR) club with 6 members. This is now designated Chapter-1. Due to popular demand, the SMSToR club has now grown to include three chapters with 10 members each. Chapter-2 was started by Craig Sande and they assessed their first single malt scotch whisky as a chapter in October of 2006. Chapter-3 was begun recently by Phil Goodman and Deven Khosla with their first whisky nosing taking place on March of 2009. Each of the chapters is an autonomous group with their own similar but slightly varying ways of operating and governing bylaws, but in the aggregate they form the Single Malt Scotch Tasters of Reno. To deal with activities of common interest to all chapters the SMSToR has an Executive Committee consisting of the chapter presidents with the ex-presidents of the chapters serving as ex-officio nonvoting members. Examples of activities of common interest would be the annual joint meeting of the chapters, the informal summer pot-luck BBQ picnic including a very informal single malt scotch tasting session, and other similar activities.

Organizational Structure

The membership of the Single Malt Scotch Tasters of Reno is divided into separate chapters which are limited to having a maximum of 10 members. This number was chosen because it was found that a group of 10 is the maximum number that is workable in terms of being able to schedule a common day for the monthly meetings and the size of a group that fits comfortably in a home entertainment environment. A frivolous reason for the number 10 is that dividing by 10 makes it incredibly easy to decide how much each chapter member owes for each meeting. Each of the chapters is an autonomous group with their own similar but slightly varying ways of operating and governing bylaws, but in the aggregate they form the Single Malt Scotch Tasters of Reno.

Executive Committee

To deal with activities of common interest to all chapters the SMSToR has an Executive Committee consisting of the chapter presidents with the ex-presidents of the chapters serving as ex-officio nonvoting members. Examples of activities of common interest would be the annual joint meeting of the chapters, the informal summer pot-luck BBQ picnic including a very informal single malt scotch tasting session, and other similar activities.
